Astana City, City of the Future?

Ask someone whether they would like to visit one of the coldest capital cities in the world, a place where, in winter, the temperature can drop below -40, and they may think twice.

Yet, tell them that this city features some of the most creative modern architecture in the world, and the temperature does rise to a more comfortable 20+ degrees in the summer months, then you are sure to raise more interest.

This is Astana, a name famous for its natural resources, one of the best cycling teams in the world, a dynamic national airline and of course, its buildings.

It is the capital of the country of Kazakhstan, the ninth largest in the world. The capital moved away from the beautiful city of Almaty in the south, and headed north to the city that was once called "White Grave", or "White Shrine", in December 1997. The city then changed its name to Astana in 1998.

Being labelled one of the coldest capital cities on earth, and once bearing the name of White Grave, may make you think that it is a hard cold city, and yet how wrong you would be. It is a testament to what forward thinking, enormous amounts of money, and a few creative architects can come up with. In some ways, at least on the surface, Astana is very much a city of the future.

In this HD video we share with you some of the modern architecture that can be seen in Astana, from the impressive Ak Orda Presidential Palace, to the awe inspiring Bayterek, the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation (Pyramid of Peace), the Khan Shatyry Entertainment Center the beautiful Ishim River and much more.

Due to time restraints, we do not show you in the above video some of the other things there are to do in and around the city. However, in the video below with Jesper Francl, Interim General Manager of the Radisson Hotel Astana, he shares with us some insights into who is travelling to the city, when the best time to visit and what there is to do, including a visit to see the Pink Flamingoes in the wild.
