Phnom Penh

Ask anyone about Cambodia's growing tourism industry and they will most likely mention Angkor Wat, which is after all, one of the world's true wonders. It has attracted millions from around the world.

A few of the more adventurous travellers, may also have experienced some of the amazing, if undevelopped, beaches to the south of the country. An airport, which has already been built, may even open sometime this year, allowing even more to enjoy some of the best beaches in the entire region.

But ask about the capital city, Phnom Penh, and many may find it hard to come up with a reason as to why they should visit the city. So, to answer this question, we asked a highly respected industry veteran who has been based in Phnom Penh twice, and is currently, in addition to being the General Manager of the InterContinental Phnom Penh, the Secretary General of the Cambodia Hotel Association.

We asked Mr. Stefan Voogel about this vibrant city, is it safe, why should people visit, what should they do when they do take the time to, are there sufficient rooms, is the government trying to use sports and other events to attract visitor arrivals, are there sufficient direct flights, how should travellers plan for a trip, what the best gifts to buy in the city are and much, much more.
